One does not simply pack for a study abroad trip.\u00a0 One ATTEMPTS to pack for a study abroad trip.<\/p>\n
I’ve read over multiple packing guidelines, made dozens of lists, and sought advice from a few world travelers in my family.\u00a0 However, there is only so much preparing that I can do.\u00a0 So I am packing light.\u00a0 Very light.\u00a0 I will be abroad in China for 4 months and will be experiencing summer, fall, and winter conditions with one medium sized suitcase and a backpack.\u00a0 (And just for bragging points, my suitcase isn’t even full.) \u00a0<\/p>\n
I know by the end of my fall semester, I will be kicking myself for lugging along some useless object that I thought I would need while longing for some other object I forgot at home.\u00a0 Yet, what I learned so far is that there is value to sitting down and doing some research.\u00a0 China is a fast growing metropolis filled with modern clothing stores.\u00a0 I can pack my favorite green jacket and buy a windbreaker and winter jacket when I get there.\u00a0 If the Chinese people can survive the blistering heat of summer and the frigid winters with Chinese clothes–so can I.\u00a0 The trick is researching and understanding why some products that I am used to purchasing easily in the U.S. may be near impossible to find in China.<\/p>\n
Many online packing guidelines suggested that if you prefer a certain face moisturizer, makeup brand or feminine product, you may want to bring a supply with you.\u00a0 This is due to cultural preferences which shape how make up and moisturizers are manufactured and sold.\u00a0 As Americans like to show off their tan skin (whether it be real or fake), Asians like to show off their pale skin.\u00a0 Therefore while some American brands will incorporate bronzers or tanners, some Asian brands may incorporate bleaching ingredients.\u00a0 The more you know the better you can prepare for what you need to stock up on and what you can leave behind.<\/p>\n
With a suitcase and a backpack I will live in one of the largest cities in the world for 4 months.\u00a0 I expect to buy some clothes and other necessities when I arrive but I am really aiming to spend my money on wonderful, once-in-a-lifetime experiences rather than things.\u00a0 <\/p>\n
Below is all the luggage I am bringing to China.\u00a0 I once learned that when traveling to a foreign country by yourself it is imperative, an absolute necessity, that you be able to carry your own stuff. Simple as that.<\/p>\n
