{"id":1124,"date":"2013-10-16T08:53:16","date_gmt":"2013-10-16T08:53:16","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/setcourseforchina.wordpress.com\/?p=1124"},"modified":"2013-10-16T08:53:16","modified_gmt":"2013-10-16T08:53:16","slug":"day-nine-part-one-visiting-a-local-elementary-school","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/evacohnchina.summitbiztech.com\/?p=1124","title":{"rendered":"Day Nine (Part One)- Visiting a Local Elementary School"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>One of my favorite parts of traveling abroad is visiting local schools.\u00a0 I did this while in India and I was able to do it in China as well.\u00a0 It is very interesting to see how schools are run in different countries, how the building is set up, what the students learn, and how the kids play!<\/p>\n<p>China recently increased its funding in schools so this local Xining elementary school is a great example of what increased funding can do!<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/evacohnchina.summitbiztech.com\/2013\/10\/dscf0877.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image\" id=\"i-1130\" alt=\"Image\" src=\"https:\/\/evacohnchina.summitbiztech.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/dscf0877.jpg\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>As we arrived, the 1,000+ kids were getting ready to do their morning exercises.\u00a0 I will probably never see this many children under the age of 12 so well organized.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/evacohnchina.summitbiztech.com\/2013\/10\/dscf08801.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image\" id=\"i-1135\" alt=\"Image\" src=\"https:\/\/evacohnchina.summitbiztech.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/dscf08801.jpg\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>We even joined in with the exercises!<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/evacohnchina.summitbiztech.com\/2013\/10\/dscf0883.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image\" id=\"i-1138\" alt=\"Image\" src=\"https:\/\/evacohnchina.summitbiztech.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/dscf0883.jpg\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>We were split up into smaller groups and had the opportunity to talk to the kids in their English class.\u00a0 Two of my classmates, Erica and Drew, and I went to the 4th grade class.\u00a0 The kids were ridiculously cute.\u00a0 We spoke to them in English and Chinese which they enjoyed a lot. Once we found out they didn&#8217;t have English names, we gave all 40 of them good ol&#8217; American names like Bobby, Sally, Tom, and Janet.\u00a0 We had a blast!<\/p>\n<p>We then visited an auditorium that had multiple classes.\u00a0 Their English was not good so we had to speak all in Chinese.\u00a0 One kid asked about American money so I passed around a 1, 5, and 10 dollar bill.\u00a0 I&#8217;ve never heard more ohhhhhh and ahhhhhh&#8217;s in my life!<\/p>\n<p>We did have one interesting cultural gaffe.\u00a0 One of the kids was&#8230;well, chubby.\u00a0 He was very chubby.\u00a0 Another student raised his hand to ask a question.\u00a0 He pointed at this chubby kid and asked us if we had fat children like him in America.\u00a0 The chubby kid voluntarily stood up to show us and was laughing.\u00a0 Drew, Erica and I had no idea what to say.\u00a0 How was this a question?
