Delicious Moon Cakes!

This Thursday is 中秋节, or the Mid-Autumn Festival.  I have off of school because this holiday is very family oriented. Students go home and many stores are closed.  One of the best parts of the Mid-Autumn Festival is the moon cakes.  These are little desserts which are only eaten during this festival.  And let me tell you, they are delicious.

They are small but dense.  One will fill you up and two will make you feel stuffed.  Today, I had two 🙂 Moon cakes are simply amazing because of all the varieties of flavors. Don’t like strawberry, try peach. No to peach, try egg. Don’t like egg, how about pear?

I didn’t even put gook or glaze on this moon cake to make it look like something out of a pastry commercial! My language partner gave this one to me and explained that they all have intricate designs on the top.

I was quizzing her about all the different flavors and was dumbfounded how she could tell the flavor of the moon cake without seeing the filling on the inside. I thought I should enter her into a contest or something. Well it turns out, most moon cakes (not the one shown above) have a Chinese character incorporated into the design which tells you the flavor. So while I thought she was a moon cake guru, she was simply reading the flavor directly off the dessert!

Regardless of the flavor, I’ll eat it.  I’ll eat them all! They are so tasty! I can’t wait for Thursday to come!

  1. Hi:   It is amazing how you can take pictures of sticky buns and make a beautiful story out of it.  You take something simple to many and create something special out of it.  I hope you are enjoying (I know you are working hard) your stay in China.  Linda is saving all of the articles on China for you when you get back.  Wehave set up a folder (Eva) for the articles she cuts out of the paper and I file them.   We miss you and think of you all day.   Love Grandma
